Daniel Glaser of LightStanza has been invited to present “Bringing Daylight Analysis off the Grid: A Novel Big Data approach” at the 2018 Building Performance Analysis Conference and Simbuild, which is co-organized by ASHRAE and IBPSA-USA.
Although climate-based annual metrics have provided a way of managing large amounts of illuminance data, they are abstract and limited to the workplane. Daylight experts, to this day reduce complex analyses into simple renderings and charts through their in-depth understanding of the problem at hand to bring out key findings for design.
This talk presents new, fully automated ways of distilling large amounts of data into representations that advanced daylight analysts will use. This includes novel representations of examining daylight ingress, glare, and blind operations. In all these cases, the only input is a 3D model with no preparation needed.
The new algorithm geometrically decomposes the model into floors, window groups, and critical analysis areas. Its simulation engine uses a novel cloud-compute architecture to run multi-stage analyses. The algorithms chooses critical times, camera views, and climate factors in producing its interactive, web-based output. Given the intelligence that can be employed with these new automated workflows, the audience will learn how to interpret this information and iterate with complimentary user-centered methods.
