Visualizing Innovations in Daylight Modeling – LightFair International 2019

Daniel Glaser presented at LightFair International in Philadelphia on May 21, 2019 with Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg (University of Oregon) and Matthew Tanteri (HLB Lighting).

The course titled “Visualizing Innovations in Daylight Modeling” explored how daylight modeling and analysis have evolved and considerations for daylight when designing for electrical lighting.

An excerpt from Dan and Matthew’s portions of the presentation is included here.

Some highlights from Dan’s portion:

  • Dimensions of daylight include spatial, temporal and human-centric
  • Glare, for example, can be experienced differently based on location, occupants, and time of day
  • Considering all of these data points for a single location means you must analyze dozens of different directions for every hour of every year at a given location. Imagine this for an entire building!
  • Glare itself is incredibly complex to analyze – daylight analysis tools can perform these calculations quickly along with other complex visualizations of effects of daylight
  • The main consideration when using daylight simulation tools needs to be how quickly, accurately and effectively the tool can analyze several options for glare mitigation strategies and other daylight simulations
  • Tools should also have features to help teams share analysis easily (quickly tag team members or comment directly on renderings)
